The Promise and Challenge of Competency-Based Education

Session Description
Competency-based education (CBE) is currently a significant movement in higher education and workforce development. CBE is focused on demonstrated learning, rather than seat time or participation. As an example, Lipscomb University’s CBE program, the CORE (Customized, Outcome-based, Relevant, Evaluation) Assessment and Development Program, uses methods of behavioral assessment and a robust coaching model to drive training and development at the individual level in higher education and employer settings. This session will include the current landscape of CBE, its significance in Higher Education and the workforce, and necessary elements to consider when designing and implementing a CBE program.

Nina Morel, Lipscomb University
Brief Bio
Nina Jones Morel, EdD, is Dean of the College of Professional Studies and associate professor of education at Lipscomb University in Nashville. She was a 2005 winner of the Milken Foundation National Educator Award and has taught at the middle, high school, and university levels. She has led ELL and coaching programs for a large school district. Morel is co-author of “How to Build an Instructional Coaching Program for Maximum Capacity” (Morel, N. & Cushman, C., Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin Press, 2012) and trains and consults nationally in the areas of coaching and competency-based education.

Tiffany Denton, Ed.D., Lipscomb University
Brief Bio
Tiffany Denton, Ed.D., is currently Assistant Dean in the College of Professional Studies at Lipscomb University, where she serves as a faculty coach and administrator of Lipscomb’s CORE Assessment Center as well as designs behaviorally based assessment and curriculum for the competency-based education program. She holds Tennessee licensure as a school psychologist and is recognized as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist as well as Board Certified Behavior Analyst with doctoral designation. Denton practiced as a school psychologist in the public school sector, learning specialist in the private school sector, academic and behavioral consultant, and an independent behavior analyst.
