Shared Concurrent Session (Approx. 12 or 20 minutes)

Session Abstract

Programmed learning paired with self-directed learning practices facilitated by an instructional interventionist is the instructional model for a rural community corrections facility in Arkansas.  Learn about the instructional design of classes taught in this session along with the impactful results for TABE 11/12 with this interactive overview of instructional design.

Target Audience

The target audience for this session are instructors and principals of corrections programs.  Those looking to attend are apt to have a desire to increase effeciency in their corrections instructional program managment.  The target audience member may have access to Pace Learning materials and are not sure of the relevance of that product to their program.  The ideal attendee would want to know how they can better the performance of their current program.  There is also idea sharing for those adult education programs currently not involved in a correctional program but are wanting to find out how to start.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this session, learners will be able to replicate the correctional program that is shared by the presenters, learn of the practical use of an instructional interventionist in an adult basic education or corrections class, identify applicable use for programmed learning curriculum in a correctional program, extract self-directed learning approaches that have been successful to creating a culture in a correctional program, identify measurable skill gains on the Test of Adult Basic Education 11/12 using this self-regulated classroom practice, and devise how Adult Education programs can integrate with existing correctional programs in their state.

Session Description

Due to current legislation reducing lengthy sentences for incarcerated individuals such as Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person Act (FIRST STEP Act) for inmates participating in recidivism programs, the time is now for Adult Education programs to collaborate with correctional programs in their service areas to fortify regular enrollment.  The session will detail how, in May 2018, a county-based Literacy Council, Adult Education program, and Correctional School Program created a wrap-around program that intergrates adult learning services for all Level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 adult learners without high school diplomas.  Key impacts for atttendees will (1) learn how Pace Learning is self-managed by inmates enrolled in ABE, (2) be provided with guidance in using an instructional interventionist in collabration with an instructor for program operations, (3) hear from the President/CEO of Pace Learning, (4) find out the TABE 11/12 results for program participants immersed in this design, (5) have a step-by-step process provided of how the educational process works from referral to identificaton to assessment to diagnosis to completion for each participant, and lastly, (6) learn how this partnership improved program enrollment, post-test rates, and measureable skill gains for a county-based Adult Education program.

Format & Technique

The presentation will be displayed using Keynote. In the opening portion, the presenter will provide an overview of the correctional program prior to collaboration with Adult Education then display transitional data that emphasises the growth and success for both programs.  The opening presenter will display a series of overview slides that detail the specific design of the course and then segue to the co-presenter.  After the introduction of the co-presenter, the curriculum will be described.  During the curriculum description the co-presenter will share historical successes she and the founder have identified which led to the development of the product.
