Abstract

Researcher expectations for simplicity in content access have been greatly increased thanks to social sharing or pirate sites such as Research Gate, Academia.edu and Sci-Hub.  Creating this same simplicity within library tools has been a challenge due to the complicated web of entitlements, authentication, aggregation and more.

LibKey, a technology derived from the BrowZine service, greatly simplifies this problem to create "signposts" for users indicating instantly their access options for scholarly articles including a single click to the PDF.  Initially designed to enhance Discovery systems, LibKey has continued to grow into new and useful venues including PubMed with LibKey Link and the new browser extension, LibKey Nomad, allowing the same enhancement across thousands of publisher pages, PubMed, Google Scholar and even Wikipedia.

This presentation will focus on the origins of the LibKey technology, how it works, where all it can be used and where it is going in the future.
