Session Description

Implementing Truth and Reconciliation as Librarians is about how librarians are transforming their libraries to honour and respect Truth and Reconciliation. Learn more about the personal experiences and professional journeys of librarians practicing truth and reconciliation in their lives and how they are bringing this awareness to our patrons through library services and programs. Participants will talk about their role as an individual and the role of the library in bringing educational and professional transformation to all the communities they serve.

Karen Hudson, Salt Spring Island Public Library
Biography

Chief Librarian at Salt Spring Island Public Library, working here for 10 years. Hilights: 20 years library experience including Salt Spring Public Library, Vancouver Public Library, UBC Library, and AskAway virtual reference; 18 years public service experience, including leadership, strategic planning, administration, management, and public outreach programs; 16 years experience supervising staff, and managing over 150 volunteers. Pia Russell, Librarian—Education, Children’s Literature, Indigenous Studies, and Gender Studies, The University of Victoria
Biography

Librarian—Education, Children’s Literature, Indigenous Studies, and Gender Studies, McPherson Library, University of Victoria. At UVic in 2006, I have been: Head of the Curriculum Library; Assessment Projects Librarian; Learning Commons Librarian; Teaching and Learning Librarian; and, Information Literacy Librarian. I received my Master of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. I graduated from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Information Studies with my Master of Information Studies in 2004 with a concentration in Archival and Library Studies.

Melanie Reaveley, Executive Director Kootenay Library Federation
Biography

Melanie Reaveley works with the Kootenay Library Federation as their Executive Director, and previously she worked as a Library Manager for a large regional library system. Melanie completed her MLIS in 2000.
