Abstract

The 23 California State University libraries recently went live with the Primo discovery service. Prior to implementation, a system-wide Usability Task Force was charged with conducting user testing and reporting their findings back to the consortium. These results were used to inform the creation of a central package, including custom HTML, CSS and JavaScript, configured to enhance the user experience across all campuses. Many in the consortium fully inherited the changes in the central package, but others chose to make additional customizations. The task force conducted an environmental scan to document these differences. A second round of testing was conducted in April 2018 across five campuses to determine which configurations best met the needs of students and faculty. The ultimate goal of the study is to provide CSU libraries with a clear blueprint of configuration instructions to help increase discoverability and enhance the user experience.
