Assuring Instructional Quality: The SCPS Faculty System

Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 10:30 AM–12:00 PM CDT
Iberville Room
Session Type

Thinking (Concurrent Session): 60-75 minutes

Session Description

Like many continuing education units, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at Loyola University Chicago relies primarily on adjunct faculty, as these instructor-practitioners provide the kind of application-oriented  learning that adult students want. However, adjunct faculty can pose a set of challenges: they often feel marginalized, and may not receive sufficient training and support. SCPS has devised a comprehensive faculty system to respond to the particular needs of adjunct faculty and ensure instructional quality. This system is based on the integration and recognition of our instructors, and shaped by our work with them as esteemed and involved colleagues. It consists of the following aspects: New faculty orientation; mentoring, review, and promotion; on-going faculty development; collaborative course and program development; professional development funds and teaching awards; participation in school events; and the formation of a Faculty Advisory Board.
